FRESNO, CA — Every hourly paycheck in Fresno and Clovis gets a new legal floor on January 1. California's statewide minimum wage rises to $17.40 an hour in 2027, up 50 cents from today's $16.90, and because neither city has a local wage ordinance of its own, that state number is the Fresno minimum wage from the Tower District to Fancher Creek.

The raise is modest, but it touches every entry-level job in the Valley, lifts the salary bar for exempt workers, and leaves fast food and health care on their own separate tracks.

💵 What Changes on January 1

The state Department of Finance certified the increase on July 31, and the California Department of Industrial Relations announced the $17.40 rate in August. California law ties the yearly bump to inflation, capped at 3.5 percent. This year's adjustment works out to roughly 3 percent.

For someone working 40 hours a week, 50 cents an hour adds up to about $1,040 a year before taxes. It isn't life-changing money, but it lands on exactly the jobs Fresno leans on most: cashiers along Blackstone, stockers at the Shaw Avenue big boxes, packing-line workers south of downtown and seasonal help at the fairgrounds.

Why the State Rate Is Fresno's Rate

Much of the Bay Area and parts of Southern California layer city minimums on top of the state figure. Fresno doesn't. The UC Berkeley Labor Center's inventory of local minimum wage ordinances lists no ordinance for Fresno, Clovis, Fresno County or the surrounding Valley cities. So from Kerman to Sanger, one number governs.

Fast food: Workers at limited-service chains with 60 or more locations nationwide already earn a $20 fast food minimum, well above the general rate. Any change there is set by the state's Fast Food Council, not by the January increase.
Health care: Covered hospitals, clinics and other health facilities follow a separate health care worker minimum wage that varies by facility type and sits above the general floor.
Salaried, exempt staff: To be exempt from overtime, full-time employees must earn at least $72,384 a year starting January 1, up from $70,304 now. Managers near that line should expect either a raise or a move to hourly pay.

The Minimum Isn't the Market

Treat $17.40 as a floor, not a going rate. Many Fresno employers, especially in logistics, health care support and skilled trades, already post starting pay above the state minimum to compete for workers. Competition is real on the other side too.
